Copperhead Beer Relay Overview

The Copperhead Beer Relay offers a unique challenge through a naturally wooded terrain bordered by swampland, creating an immersive race experience. Participants will navigate a course with varying footing, including a loop followed by an out-and-back section. While we have taken steps to minimize bugs by spraying and fogging the field, the course itself remains untreated. As the name suggests, the Copperhead Beer Relay is set in August amidst the woodlands, and wildlife, including snakes, may be encountered. In the event of such encounters, please keep a safe distance and notify event staff immediately. Remember, animals typically avoid human presence.

20K Individual Race

  • Race Structure: The 20K race consists of four 5K loops. Each runner will be given a bib and a bag labeled with their race number, which includes a beer cup.

  • Beer/Chocolate Milk Option: After each 5K loop, participants may choose to drink either a 12oz beer or chocolate milk at the checkpoint. Beverages consumed before starting the next loop will earn you a 2-minute time deduction for each drink. Be sure to place the empty cup in your participant bag, labeled with your number, as you cross the checkpoint. The clock continues to run while you drink, so choose your beverage wisely.

  • Age & Gender Grading: The race is graded based on age and gender, applying a handicap system to ensure fairness. Age grading will be detailed in the roster sheets.

  • Awards: The top 5 overall finishers will receive awards. The ranking is adjusted for age and gender.

    • 20K Individual Finishers: Machetes will be awarded to the top 5 overall finishers (gender combined due to handicap adjustments).

Beer Mile

  • Race Structure: The beer mile consists of four 400-meter loops. Runners must drink a beer at the start and after each loop (totaling four beers for the entire race).

  • Beer Drinking: Participants will grab a beer at the checkpoint after each loop and must consume it before continuing. The time spent drinking is included in the overall race time.

  • No Handicaps: There are no time deductions for drinking in the beer mile.

  • Awards: Awards will be given to the top 3 finishers in each category:

    • Men

    • Women

    • Clydesdale

    • Athena

Double Copperhead Trouble (If you sign up for both 20K Individual and Beer Mile)

The ultimate challenge! This category combines both the 20K and Beer Mile for a true test of endurance and beer-loving spirit. The overall champion will receive a special award if they can still stand tall after completing both events.

20K Beer Relay

  • Team Roster & Baton Handling: Each relay team will be provided a baton equipped with a timing chip. This baton must be passed between each runner at the exchange zone to track split times. The next runner should be ready to receive the baton when the previous runner arrives.

  • Age-Graded & Gender-Weighted Relay: The relay is both age-graded and gender-weighted. Women receive a 10% handicap on top of the standard age grading. Teams must keep the baton through all legs of the race.

  • Relay Rules:

    • The race order for each team is flexible. However, the first runner must check in before the race begins.

    • Teams may consume up to four beverages (beer or chocolate milk), one per runner. Each beverage consumed will reduce the team's time by 2 minutes. A runner is limited to one beverage.

    • The final runner will retrieve the team bag and index card and present them to the beer judge. This must be done for time deductions to apply.

    • If any team member is changed, please notify organizers to avoid disqualification.

  • Awards:

    • Overall Relay Champion: This will include beer deduction + handicap considerations.

    • Fastest Team: The fastest team to cross the line including time deductions from beer consumption.

    • Corporate Charity Team: Must be a corporate charity partner - Must Sign Up under this division

    • Beer Club Team: Must be associated with a brewery or bottle shop - Must sign up under this division

    • Top 3 Beer Mile Finishers (Men/Women, Clydesdale/Athena): Machetes will be awarded to the top 3 in both open and Clydesdale/Athena categories
